Here's a number that should shake things up: according to Bank & Vogue's analysis of global secondhand data, the average garment today is worn just 7 to 10 times before being discarded, a decline of more than 35% compared to fifteen years ago.
That means the dress bought for Saturday's dinner party has already been mentally retired before the week is out. Not because it stopped being beautiful. Because the algorithm said so.
This is fast fashion's most toxic gift: the idea that clothing has an expiry date tied to how many people have seen it, not how long it actually lasts. Outfit repeating is the direct rebellion against that idea. And it's winning.
